On Thursday the 19th of July, the Research Hive invited Rosie Sheridan and Ed Moffat, two publishers from SAGE, to discuss issues relating to publishing in academic journals. Publishing is a salient subject for researchers, especially in the current climate of research excellence. The two speakers talked about metrics and how to evaluate which journal is more likely to maximise the impact of one’s work. They also talked about the more practical nuances of submitting on academic journals, such as following the journal guidelines, proofreading, cover letters and, of course, following the academic conventions of writing. They further discussed copyright and ethical issues, as well as how to handle revisions. After the end of the presentation, the audience got to ask questions and the presenters got the opportunity to provide clarifications. Most of the questions were concerned with the conflict that may arise from submitting the same article to different journals and with intellectual property rights.
