2020: Making it to the End

Before we start talking about wrapping up this year, the Hive would like to send the biggest virtual hug to those affected by the latest Covid-19 guidelines. We hope you’re keeping well and if you need to reach out, please do — we are here for you through the break and would love to catch up and offer support during the holidays (that can often be the loneliest time for some — especially international students!).

This has been a strange year in more ways than one but let’s not delve into it. We hope as we approach the end of 2020, you can find time and ways to celebrate your achievements — whether it was a successful viva, or even if you just fought really hard to keep your mental health afloat. We are so proud of each and every one of you. In fact, we’d like to celebrate and acknowledge this by sending a new round of care packages with the help of funding from the Doctoral School. We are opening registration for a limited time only. You can sign up here: http://bit.ly/CarePackages21

The festive period is of course quite different for many people this year. For some, it may be a welcome relief, in which case we hope you enjoy the peace and solitude. For others, it may be a difficult or perhaps disappointing.

  • Be sure to take a break, our bodies need it at the best of times but even more so this year. While you are there try not to feel guilty for taking some time out, or even putting in boundaries with others to ensure you get what you need.
  • Connect with others however you can, this may be outside (remember your hat if you are in the UK)! Or perhaps a virtual meet up if you can stand anymore Zoom calls!
  • Try to be realistic: this holiday might not be what we were all expecting, and that’s ok. We’ve got through a very trying year while doing a PhD and that’s something to celebrate.
  • If things haven’t gone quite to plan for you, remember to do the things that make you happy and bring a sense of joy and relief, however small this may be.

Also remember, you aren’t alone: you can always reach out to us on our email: researchhive@sussex.ac.uk or on our Instagram and Twitter @sussexreshive, we will be here!

Finally, we are glad to be able to offer community support through your PhD and will continue to do so in the new year. We’d love to hear from you and know what kind of events and support you’re seeking so we can do everything to make it happen.

We’d appreciate if you filled this little form (it only has 1 question, we promise!) and let us know what you would like to see in 2021: bit.ly/hive_2021

Happy holidays, we look forward to seeing you in the new year!
